I'd like to try a Tri...

There is something that I've always wanted to try - and that would be a Triathlon, the thing is, I'm pretty sure I can't, because I am certifiably insane.

I've got this weird thing when it comes to water. It's not that I just don't like swimming - it's that I'm actually consumed by the fact that I hate all things water. Actually to clarify - I love being near water and being on a boat doesn't phase me a bit, but put me in the water and I feel like I've been buried alive. It's wonderful. Just to give you an idea of how far this extends consider that:

1. One of my greatest fears is empty swimming pools, don't ask me why - like I said INSANE.
2. I hate taking baths - the thought of sitting in a tepid pool of my own filth seems to me a lot like sitting in a tepid pool of my own filth.
3. I can't even stand to have the toilet lid up - somehow the sight of that water just sitting in there, mocking me, waiting to suck me down into it's abyss is a little more than I can handle.
4. When I was a child I was terrified of the blue water in the toilet (you know when you add those tablet things), and that every time I had to go I would literally back up to the toilet so that I wouldn't have to look inside it.
5. Also as a child I was a terrible swimmer - teachers basically had to push me off the edge for me to jump in, I failed the Red level about 5 times and passed it 3 times (I was too scared to move up to the next level, so I kept repeating it). This can't possibly be normal behavior.

And finally Matthew's future brother-in-law who is a seasoned Ironmanner described the swim at a triathlon like this last night - imagine you're swimming alone in a pool and suddenly someone dumps in about 500 cats, that's what it feels like.

I imagine that this is will not the help the whole "feeling like I'm being buried alive in the pool" thing.

Yah - unfortunately for me it may be a while until I manage to try a Tri.

PS - Happy birthday to Michelle and Krista!

I've also heard the analogy of swimming in a blender. I'm only comforted by the fact that I get to wear a wetsuit which means I will float - you can do it Purl - join the madness! Bahhhhh!

Doing a tri is one of my goals, but I absolutely love the water and I'm still nervous about the swim. It will be very choppy.

It's been a while since I've done much research on it, but I think you can register as a team. Maybe you can do the run and the bike and you can have a "pinch swimmer?"

Good luck and thanks for the laugh!

I love swimming, but am not sure I'd want to try it either.

Thanks for the birthday wishes & the laughs.

How was your birthday?

My advice.... look into a tri group to help you go through what a tri would look like.. .they'll make sure you have good technique for swimming and get you used to being in the pool...

and my second piece of advice is when you go for the tri, pick one that the swim is in a pool, not open water. The pool tri's are a lot more time regulated, you swim with people that are your pace and not everyone is in the pool at the same time.

third. Do it. You'll love it :)

I've always been afraid of dark waters. The thought of swimming where I cant see beneath me is terrifying!.

Hydrophobia is real, and sometimes can be awfully debilitating. I think if you set your mind to it, you can succeed though. If it is something you really want to do, I say go for it a little at a time, maybe try some professional swimming lessons first, just to have the security in the water. Good luck, I look forward to hearing more about this!

I belonged to a swimming club my whole teenage life...and getting over a fear of water can be challenging Purl. But doable!! There would be so many swimming with you, I'm sure you'd make it through. Especially with your adrenaline pumping and all that.

THanks for the bday wishes!!

For me, knowing that I can do the breast stroke through a tri (I've done at least 7 of them) then I'm sure that my face will be out of the water with every stroke...it makes the water feel less, shall we say, coffin-ish?
